Emerson Point Preserve

EMERSON POINT PRESERVE, situated at the western tip of Snead Island along the Manatee River, spans 365 acres and is both state-owned and managed by Manatee County. Beyond its exceptional birding opportunities, the preserve boasts a captivating Indian Temple Mound site known as the “Portavant Mound,” dating back over 1,000 years. Interpretive signs guide visitors in envisioning the ancient lifestyles of native peoples in this historic locale.

Traversing the length of the preserve is a road complemented by boardwalks and nine trails meandering through coastal habitats and upland forested areas. Explore the six miles of paved hiking/biking trails or opt for the unpaved shell or sand paths, all marked with “You Are Here” maps at trail junctions. For a breathtaking view of Tampa Bay, ascend the 60-feet high observation tower. Restrooms are conveniently available on-site, and there is no admission fee.

A Must See at the Preserve:

• The Portavant Mound is the first parking lot on the main road, and during migration is the best place to find warblers. 
• The Visitors Center is a great place to take the south restoration trail through hardwood in search for woodpeckers, thrushes, warblers, and more. 
• “Magic Pond” with its bird blind gives birdwatchers and photographers close up looks at visiting wader birds and ducks. 
• Observation Tower “Tower Trail” is a great place to look for migratory birds and to listen for rails. 
• Beach walk trail – overlooking Tampa Bay where you may see common loons, grebes, pelicans, American Oystercatchers and more.
